![]() It means that many of them are almost like little sketches of a single, simple idea rather than well-polished texts that contain many conscious layers. What's this mean for the reader? It means that, in general, the stories are short, even for the genre of short stories. In his rather indulgent afterword, Bradbury hints that he dashes off many of his short stories in two hours or less. ![]() ![]() I had been really looking forward to reading this novel, and I was delighted when I was asked to contribute a review to a blog tour. ![]() Amid destruction and unexpected death as a result of enemy action, there is another question surrounding the murder of a young woman, and it is this death that Maisie must investigate. This is the London of Edward Murrow making broadcasts to America subtly urging them to join in another War by detailing how the people of Britain were coping, standing alone in the face of a force which had invaded much of the rest of Europe. This is also a novel set in September 1940 in a London undergoing the blitz, and it conveys a wealth of experience of the uncertainty of life. Winspear has produced twelve books which carefully document a woman’s life up to this point, but the really good thing is that this book can be read as a complete standalone novel. A series which begins before the First World War with the story of a young girl who finds a unique mentor and several benefactors has developed into a story of a determined older woman who has had many traumatic experiences. ![]() The name Maisie Dobbs is well known to many who love well constructed, powerful fictional women detectives. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here, the untrusting anthropology Professor, Dr. Margaret’s Cemetery in Memphis Tennessee. It was this skill that earned her and Tolliver (now manager and sometimes bodyguard) a way to make a living and an interesting invitation to the old St. Oh and she also acquired a new skill – she could now find dead people. She awoke with a strange red spider web pattern on her torso and leg, painful headaches that would come and go, and her right hand would sometimes shake uncontrollably. ![]() Thankfully she recovered… well more or less. ![]() It was Tolliver, her step-brother, who found her and performed CPR to bring her back to life. When Harper Connelly was fifteen years old she was struck by a bolt of lightning. ![]() But unfortunately not everyone sees it that way… in Grave Surprise, written by Charlaine Harris (the author of the beloved true blood series) and Royal Mcgraw, and illustrated by Ilias Kyriazis. The way Harper sees it, she is providing a service to the dead while also bringing closure to the living. She can sense the final location of a person who has passed, and share their very last moment. Harper Connelly has what you might call a strange job – she finds dead people. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It also prevented my various aunts, uncles, and kitchen-sink cousins from feeling like they had to offer me temporary employment in their restaurant/butcher shop/legal practice/boutique. No, it’s what’s behind those icy blues that brings the audience out in droves. Not the lashes, or the shape, or the way she doesn’t need eyeliner to give them the appearance of a cat’s. Maybe this one will be the one who stops you. ![]() ![]() ![]() Toru and Kizuki’s girlfriend Naoko form a bond and he soon falls in love with her. It’s set in the 60s in Tokyo and it follows Toru Watanabe, a college student coming to terms with the death of his best friend Kizuki. There are certainly elements of a love story (it’s listed in the top 100 romance books on Goodreads), but there’s not a great deal of romance to be seen. I find it quite difficult to put into words what this book is about, because it didn’t seem to have a clear meaning for me. ![]() I’ve recently finished and have to say that I found it a little… odd. “Norwegian Wood” is the most famous of Harumi Murakami‘s work, so it seemed the perfect starting point for me. Immediately he is transported back almost twenty years to his student days in Tokyo, adrift in a world of uneasy friendships, casual sex, passion, loss and desire – to a time when an impetuous young woman called Midori marches into his life and he has to choose between the future and the past. When he hears her favourite Beatles song, Toru Watanabe recalls his first love Naoko, the girlfriend of his best friend Kizuki. Here’s how they fall out for me: I’ve just finished my fourth book, Just For Fun. How many books have you written and which is your favorite? The combination of superb athletic achievement and celebrity with the expectation that you’re still a “regular Kiwi joker” or a “good bloke” makes for fascinating hero material. These young men face so much pressure and are under such a spotlight-it’s a completely different environment from the U.S. But what’s different is that the players are expected to be model citizens off the field as well. In New Zealand, being an All Black (a member of the rugby team that represents the country in play against other nations) is the absolute pinnacle of achievement-what every boy longs to be. On the same note, why did you decide on rugby players as heroes? I think everyone would like to escape to New Zealand-I know I did! The beauty and diversity of the landscape (not to mention the seascapes), the Maori culture and its integration into the country’s life, and, perhaps more than anything, the people: modest, good-humored, unfailingly polite and hospitable, and so very funny. Welcome to Jersey Girl Book Reviews, Rosalind! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I recently spoke to William Gibson about the book, his ideas about science fiction and genre, and more. The Peripheral is an incredible feat of speculative imagination and one of the best books of the year. (Sound familiar?) The unfolding relationship between these two futures, which is built around a technological vision that is genuinely, strikingly new, acts as a kind of immersion therapy for the reader: she is slowly assimilated into the life-world, language, and political reality of these dueling futures. After an accumulation of mid-level martial, epidemic, and climate-based catastrophes - referred to as The Jackpot - the population has dwindled, and the world’s considerable technological resources are in the hands of a corrupt oligarchy. The second future, set in London more than 100 years from now, is far stranger and more alienating. The Peripheral’s first future, which occurs a few decades from now in the rural American South, features mega-versions of Walmart, 3D-printed meth, and new, pernicious forms of post-traumatic illness that stem from ever more technologically advanced military combat. ![]() It’s a rather extraordinary and rare event, then, that Gibson has set his new novel, The Peripheral, in not one but two futures. His last novel to be set in the future, in fact, was 1999’s All Tomorrow’s Parties. For an author who is arguably our greatest speculist of techno-culture, William Gibson hasn’t been spending much time in the future. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jerome will later immortalize Ned's fumbling.
